OUR MISSION TO FOSTER DIVERSITY

Equity, Inclusion and Diversity

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley is
committed to equity, inclusion, and diversity. Our vision is
to create an inclusive environment that increases the
percentage of women and underrepresented minorities into the
graduate and undergraduate programs and into the staff and
faculty of Mechanical Engineering. We aim to enhance
pathways for leadership and academic development and we are
resolved to increasing the number of women and
underrepresented minorities in our department twofold within
the next decade.

Our strategy consists of several elements: (i) outreach at
the k-12 levels; (ii) summer research programs for
undergraduates and prospective undergraduates; (iii)
recruitment and retention of women and minorities in the
undergraduate and graduate program; (iv) social programs and
activities for enhancement of climate; (v) workshops on
professional development topics such as leadership,
teaching, time management and conflict resolutions; (vi)
mentorship involving faculty, staff, alumni, graduate
students, and undergraduates; (vii) leadership and community
service; and (viii) an annual retreat for the Committee on
Equity, Inclusion and Diversity and associated students,
faculty and staff.

Ideas for improving the climate within the department and
the academic community are most welcome.
