ME Professor Xiang Zhang’s PhD student Zi Jing Wong, has won the Best Student Paper Award at the Metamaterials 2015 – Ninth International Congress on Advanced Electromagnetic Materials in Microwaves and Optics. The Congress provides “”a unique topical forum to share the latest results of the metamaterials research in Europe and worldwide and bring together the engineering, physics, and material science communities working on artificial materials and their applications from microwaves to optical frequencies, as well as in acoustics, mechanics, and thermodynamics.”” Wong’s award winning paper titled “”Parity-Time Optical Metamaterial Devices”” discusses how to take advantage of the usually undesired loss to build novel parity-time optical devices with unique properties and functionalities.

Wong also recently won the Best Student Paper Award at the 2015 IEEE Photonics Conference, and at CLEO Pacific Rim 2015 - The 11th Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Pacific Rim. Congratulations, Zi Jing!
