Please join the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley as we celebrate Professor David Bogy’s remarkable life and career on Thursday, August 31, 2023.
David came to Berkeley as an Assistant Professor in July 1967 and has been a major contributing and beloved member of our department for 56 years, teaching and doing research in the areas of continuum mechanics, tribology, and dynamics. He founded the world-renowned Computer Mechanics Laboratory (CML) in 1989 and has remained at the forefront of the mechanics, tribology, and information storage research communities, as well as being actively engaged in research and student advising since retiring and becoming the William S. Floyd Distinguished Professor of the Graduate School in 2009. He has been the longest-serving Department Chair in our department’s recent history, serving for eight consecutive years starting in 1991.
David has supervised to completion 71 Ph.D. students, many of whom are professors in major research universities, or research engineers in the computer disk drive industry, as well as technology companies such as Google and Apple.
We hope that many of his former students and his colleagues from academia and industry will join us for this one-day BogyFest celebration to honor David’s many academic and research accomplishments, as well as to recognize his devoted and selfless service to our department, the Berkeley campus, and professional societies such as the National Academy of Engineering and ASME.

Sincerely,
Roberto Horowitz
