Spring 2026 – ME Student Access Machine Shop Safety Orientation Training

Registration begins on 1/20/2026.

Registration and successful completion of our required bCourse MUST be completed before signing up for our hand on training.

The hands-on portion of the safety orientations will be offered from 1/26/2026 through 3/20/2026.

The Mechanical Engineering Student Access Machine Shop is available for students who will be working on projects and research related to our academic mission (see the requirements listed below). First scheduling priority will be given to our supported undergraduate courses.

In order to use the ME Student Shop, students must complete our safety orientation training. The safety guidelines and policies provided in this orientation are exclusive to the UC Berkeley ME Student Access Machine Shop. Because equipment, layouts, and requirements vary significantly between locations, this training does not constitute authorization or qualification to operate machinery in any other facility. Use of these protocols outside of this specific shop is at the user’s own risk. For the same reasons, training in another shop or location also does not qualify an individual to work in our shop.

If you’re interested in getting access to the Student Machine Shop and receiving the required training, please fill out the following form: ME Student Access Machine Shop Training Request Form

If approved for access to the Student Shop (see requirements below) you will receive a link to the online safety training bCourse. Once you have successfully completed this course, you will be able to sign up for a hands-on training slot. This training is only available at the beginning of each semester, and it consists of five hours of in-shop instruction while covering safe working practices and machine tool competency. The five-hour training session MUST be completed within a single eight-hour workday. Please refer to the training dates above. The training begins promptly at 8 am and ends around 4:00 pm.
