Currently, the Student Access Machine Shop is not open for student access. The technical staff have been approved to return to campus and are currently accepting work orders. Undergraduate and graduate students that need components fabricated for class projects or research may submit work requests to us at meshops-me@berkeley.edu. When submitting a work request, please be sure to include a .pdf drawing of your part and any file type specific to the method of fabrication (e.g. 3D Printing -> .stl file). Additionally, please provide a brief description of the project including the class that it’s for or the research laboratory that you’re working under.
Here is a list of most services we provide:
- Laser Cutting
- 3D Printing
- Manual Machining (Lathe, Mill, Drill Press, Etc.)
- CNC Machining (Lathe and Mill)
- Water Jet Cutting
- Sheet Metal Fabrication
- 3D Scanning
- Welding (MIG and TIG)
- Tube Bending
- Compression and Tension testing
- Heat Treating
- Hardness Testing
Once you have submitted a work request, a technician will respond with a quote for the job. If the work is for an undergraduate class project, the work is free. If the work is for a research laboratory, our work rate is $85/hour. Researchers will need to fill out an IOC form and must receive approval from their professor before any work can begin. Charges associated with 3D printing are independent from our hourly rate and apply to both class based projects and research. Most questions related to our 3D printing prices can be found here.
Once your work request has been approved, you’ll then need to deliver the material to us. We require all students to provide their own material for their projects. We have a designated pick up/drop off area for materials and parts directly in front of the Student Shop door (1166 Etcheverry Hall). Due to the limited number of individuals currently allowed in the building, you may or may not have card key access. If you are unable to gain access inside Etcheverry Hall, please contact us at (510) 642-4006 Monday-Thursday between 8am-5pm so that we may arrange the pickup or drop off of your materials and/or parts.
Once your work has been completed, you’ll receive a confirmation email and can return to the Student Shop to retrieve your parts.
If you have any questions related to design or fabrication, please contact us at meshops-me@berkeley.edu. Additionally, the Technical Staff are available via Zoom for this purpose. Please check back soon as we will be offering routine office hours for design/fabrication consultation.
We look forward to working with you in the near future. Stay healthy and stay safe.
