12.1 Change of Degree Goal – Add Ph.D. to 5th Year or M.Eng
Currently enrolled ME students in the M.Eng or 5th Year B.S./M.S. program who wish to continue their studies and enroll in the Ph.D. program in the Department of Mechanical Engineering need to submit the following materials to Yawo Akpawu at the Student Services Office by the Mechanical Engineering PhD application deadline, which can be found here:
- A revised statement of purpose.
- A letter of recommendation from a Faculty member in a position to assess the student’s ability to succeed in a PhD program.
Transcripts are not due by the application deadline, which is typically in early December, since fall grades will not have been posted yet. Instead, transcripts will be due by the first instructional day of the spring semester immediately following the application deadline. Please review the relevant academic calendar here to determine the due date.
All the applicants will be reviewed simultaneously with the regular applicant pool using the same criteria and standards by the same admission committee. This policy is to ensure a transparent, thorough, and fair application review process, independent from an applicant’s current or past enrollment at Berkeley. Final Decisions regarding the application will be sent to the student by the end of the semester subsequent to the application deadline.
Students who request the change of their degree goal must aim to complete their current degree by the end of the degree’s normative time.
