In addition to the hands-on training offered at the Student Machine Shop, the Mechanical Engineering shops provide machining and fabrication services for students that need assistance on class projects or research. These work requests may be submitted to us at: meshops-me@berkeley.edu. When submitting a work request, please be sure to include a dimensioned *.pdf drawing of your part and any file type specific to the method of fabrication (e.g. 3D Printing → *.stl file). Additionally, please provide a brief description of the project including the class that it’s for or the research laboratory that you’re working under.
Here is a list of the services we provide and any required file type associated with them:
- Laser Cutting on the Universal Laser Cutter (*.dxf or *.ai)
- 3D Printing on the Stratasys F170 or Markforged X7 (*.stl)
- CNC Milling or Lathing (*.sldprt or *.igs or *.step)
- Water Jet Cutting on the OMAX Abrasive Jet Machine (*.dxf)
- 3D Scanning on the Romer Absolute Arm (*.jpg or *.png of part to be scanned)
- Welding (MIG or TIG)
- Tube Bending
- Compression and Tension Testing
- Heat Treating
- Hardness Testing
Once you have submitted a work request, a technician will respond with a quote for the job. If the work is for an undergraduate class project, the work is free. If the work is for a research laboratory, our work rate is $85/hour. Researchers will need to fill out an IOC form and must receive approval from their professor before any work can begin. DocuSign versions of the IOC forms are available on request. Charges associated with 3D printing are independent from our hourly rate and apply to both class based projects and research.
Except for 3D printing requests, we require all students to provide their own material for their projects. The material may be dropped off to us in 1166 Etcheverry Hall.
When your work has been completed, we will send you a confirmation email. You can then return to the Student Shop to retrieve your parts.
If you have any questions related to design or fabrication, please contact us at meshops-me@berkeley.edu.
